a traffic coney island of the mind

traffic cone, originally uploaded by Dru Marland.

Along with the mists and the conkers come the first students of autumn to Bristol. Late at night they may be heard, scouring the after-pub streets in search of traffic cones to adorn their Clifton garrets. We dream that one day, a more just and equitable society will provide every student with their own traffic cone. But for now, here's a handy cut-out-n-keep one. Enjoy!

  1. I hope that the ones that need it find this one

  2. You could probably sell those at Freshers' Fair.

  3. I could have done with a few of these in my second year. I shared a room with one of those people whose stuff just seems to expand to fill all available space, so I had to nick a cone to 'draw the line' and stake my claim. Mine was the luxury version with a flashing yellow beacon perched on top.

I noticed on some footage the other day that Japanese cones have spiral markings rather than banding. You'd have thought someone would have done the necessary PhD by now to establish which cone design worldwide is the most effective (the range of student applications included), and that optimised standardisation would have resulted. Anyhow, I dare say your cut-out cone will prove a major contribution to traffic cone lore, and Clifton ought to be a better place for it!

  4. Me too, Anji; it's awful to think of them ,lying awake, racked with the awful sense of a traffic cone-shaped hole in their lives...
    They'd probably nick 'em, Anne...
You lived with a flashing lght, Suzzy? Gosh... some of my studenty household used to pinch those flashing beacons to power their electric bong. Very imaginative way of getting wasted...
