early one morning

Just before dawn there's a handover period between the night shift and the day shift. So you can hear both owls and robins. And then you can wonder what it is that an owl hoot reminds you of.

Ol' lonesome freight train;
low call of the tawny owl
rolls over the roofs.

  1. You nailed it. To wit, Casey Jones and all.

    And a man on the wireless said that this year there's an odd seasonal 'handover' where waxwings brush wing tips with swallows - species that by rights should never be less than a thousand or so miles apart.

  2. Three weeks ago the dawn was full of calls for sex but suddenly they thought better of it...

  3. I like the idea of a handover period. That 'pause' just before the day.
